Hello ! This issue brings three big announcements:
Please log on to www.pmsa.net to check out the new site and register for the conference! Back to top A Top Gun Management Scientist
A "Top Gun" is "one who performs at the pinnacle of professional ability; one who is the best at what one does." By connecting with the PMSA community - either as an attendee at a conference or symposium, or a member on the website - you have indicated an interest in becoming a top gun management scientist. To our knowledge, no manufacturer or supplier requires their employees to become PMSA members as a condition of employment; membership is a voluntary endeavor that shows that you care about the quality of your work. But performing "at the pinnacle of professional ability" necessitates something more than passive participation. It suggests an interaction with other professionals - a striving for knowledge and healthy competition with peers. This year PMSA has taken actions to allow you to do just this - not just once or twice a year at an event - but everyday, around the clock, on demand. OUR NEW WEBSITE IS THE TOOL FOR TOP GUN SCIENTISTS SOCIAL NETWORKING: MENTORS: You can also set your "notifications" so that you can be notified of any new questions that are posted to the message board. This may be particularly useful for consultants who want to show their expertise in research, methodology, or knowledge of a particular topic area. Currently, some archived presentations are available to everyone on the website. In the future, PMSA will post all training, training materials, posters, and presentations for member or attendee access only - so that you can review these on-demand. KNOWLEDGE: OPPORTUNITY: The PMSA To make suggestions on website improvements, corrections, or general information, please contact Jennifer Ding, Member Relations. *Some website features are only visible once you are logged in. To log in, use the user information sent to you from PMSA or register to create your own user ID. You do not need to be a paying member of PMSA to create a user account for the website. Back to top PMSA ANNUAL CONFERENCE: WELCOME ALL TOP GUN SCIENTISTS By Jesse Ma, Program Committee ChairThe U.S. in general, and the pharmaceutical industry in particular, is holding its collective breath to see what changes President Obama and our new Congress will bring to our healthcare system. Join Dan Mendelson, former Clinton staffer and public policy advisor (mentioned by The Pink Sheet as a candidate for Obama's head of CMS) as he presents his Washington D.C. insider's viewpoint on what is to come with the new administration. (The Pink Sheet, FDC Reports, Elsevier Business Intelligence, 11/7/2008)Are You Ready? Political and Economic Change in Pharmaceutical MarketsFundamental change is coming to pharmaceutical markets. It's the economy, but also a brand new philosophy of how to shape and regulate healthcare in the United States. The Medicare program is now the largest purchaser of drugs in the world, and to put it gently, the program is under new management. Fundamental health reform is also on the table, including a sharp focus on insurance markets, clinical effectiveness, health information technology, and other areas of direct interest to your company. Dan will shed some light on how economic and political changes are likely to affect your markets.About Dan Mendelson
From 1998 to 2000, Dan served as Associate Director for Health at the Office of Management and Budget, the White House office responsible for creating the President's budget and for policy coordination across the Administration. He supervised a staff of 75, and was responsible for the full healthcare portfolio including Medicare, Medicaid, NIH, CDC, and FDA. His work included development of the Administration's pharmaceutical benefit, Presidential initiatives in health information technology and medical error prevention, the electronic disease surveillance system, and federal policies in reimbursement and technology assessment. Prior to joining OMB, Dan was Senior Vice President of The Lewin Group (currently a subsidiary of United Healthcare) and Director of the Medical Technology Practice. During his eight-year tenure he had a range of responsibilities, including management of a transnational pharmaceutical and medical device consulting practice. Between 1994 and 1996 Dan was also closely involved in the operations of Value Rx, a pharmacy benefit management company (PBM). He also actively assisted both Value Health and Quintiles Transnational in due diligence on acquisitions. Dan has published widely in peer-reviewed and professional journals on health information technology, the costs of disease, hospital costs and operations, physician payment, the economics of managed care, medical malpractice, and a range of other topics in healthcare policy and business. He holds an undergraduate degree in economics and viola performance from Oberlin College, and a Masters in Public Policy from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Back to top OUR 2009 JANUARY SYMPOSIUM: Advanced Analytics Utilizing Anonymized Patient Level Data By Tracy Blancas, Professional Development ChairAt this year's PMSA Symposium, we hosted over 100 attendees, with a large majority representing manufacturers. The Symposium focused on practical and theoretical insights into utilization of Patient-level data (PLD) - the latest trend enabling better and faster decision-making on marketing, sales operations, portfolio analysis, managed markets, and clinical therapeutic pursuits. It addressed current and emerging analytic application uses in marketing and sales with hands-on "live" manufacturer case studies, best practices for working with brand analytics teams and PLD data vendors, how some manufacturer challenges utilizing PLD were being handled, in general discussion and via vendor and manufacturer panels. Thank you for your contribution in making the Symposium a success!
